A Unique Team:
Joe Carlen and David Kochalko, the founders of Value Guards, possess different yet highly complementary skill sets. As well, Carlen and Kochalko share the same vision of helping companies optimize value and avoid preventable losses at the negotiation table.
Joe Carlen: Certified Valuation Analyst
Joe Carlen offers a unique combination of financial knowledge, business acumen, and strong writing skills. Collectively, these are leveraged for the benefit of clients through the preparation of highly effective strategic documents. A specialist in business valuation, patent valuation, and market assessment, Joe Carlen has been sought out by a wide variety of entrepreneurs, midsize firms such as Pacific Plastics & Engineering (medical device design & manufacturing) and Unicom Technology (telecommunications infrastructure) and larger firms like Time Warner and Westinghouse Energy. Mr. Carlen wrote a comprehensive biography of valuation guru Benjamin Graham (read the Economist review here) and he also wrote A Brief History of Entrepreneurship for Columbia University Press.
Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) with the NACVA who also earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and an MISM (Information Systems) Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University, Carlen brings his strong financial and technical knowledge to bear on all projects. He has conducted valuations of businesses of a wide range of sizes and industries but his technical background makes him more comfortable than most valuators with highly technical and IP-weighted businesses. Carlen has been featured as a guest speaker at Columbia University, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the Museum of American Finance. In recent years, Carlen has also made over thirty media appearances, including on such highly-rated programs as the Cheri Hill Show and the nationally syndicated MoneyTalk.
David Kochalko: Growth & M&A Specialist
After working in several other technology-oriented companies, David Kochalko worked for the global data and media giant Thomson Reuters for over twenty years. As an executive at this Fortune 500 Company, he designed and executed highly successful growth strategies for scientific & healthcare R&D markets. The results speak for themselves, considering that Kochalko drove revenue from $60 million to over $320 million, attaining operating margins approaching 40% (EBITDA), while delivering information solutions for 7,000 corporate, government and university customers in 120 countries. Kochalko has experience owning P&L’s and leading core business functions including Finance, Marketing, Operations, Product Management and Strategy.
Returning to full-time consulting in 2014, Kochalko has leveraged his industry experience to help clients develop sell-side strategies, execute acquisitions, enter new markets and develop mutually beneficial strategic relationships. Among other notable accomplishments, Kochalko served as senior advisor to the Onex Corporation during their successful $3.5 billion acquisition of Thomson Reuter’s Intellectual Property & Science business. Mr. Kochalko has three Masters degrees — in Applied Economics, Public Policy, and Business Administration — all from the highly-ranked University of Michigan.
